La Fonera fans, it’s finally time to celebrate. Iteration 2.0, which is fittingly dubbed the Liberator, is at long last ready for shipment… to developers, at least. The La Fonera 2.0 box will certainly look familiar to owners of the first, with just 1,000 of these being prepped for consumers in France, Germany and Spain. The intention here is for devs to start toying around and “programming their own applications for other Foneros out there.” More specifically, the creators are hoping that more USB functionality will be worked in so we’ll eventually have Fonera WiFi boxes that play nice with USB hard drives, printers, scanners, webcams and all manners of cooling devices. It’s available now (for a limited time, obviously) for €39.95 ($53) if you’re up to the challenge. Oh, and if you design an application sweet enough for the Fonera 2.0, you’ll be reimbursed the buy price — not bad, eh?

Eager to live in the fantastical future it has prophesied, NTT DoCoMo went to CEATEC and demoed an upcoming addition to its Pocket U service: MH2H (Mobile Home to Home), which gives you the ability use your cellphone to stream content from your computer at home to a friend’s TV. The phone connects to your friend’s WiFi network and sends his or her DLNA-compliant receiver the IP address of your also-DLNA-compliant server, then tells stated server to accept the connection and begin streaming any videos, songs, or pics you feel like sharing. When you leave, the connection ends and every one goes back to partying on their own isolated media islands like it’s 2006.

If researchers at Boston University’s College of Engineering have their way, light bulbs of the future may be the highway your data gets carried along. A team at the school is working on low-power LEDs which could utilize an optical communication system to carry data wirelessly. Using a technique which rapidly switches the LEDs on and off data transmissions could be made via imperceptible — yet undoubtedly brain-scrambling — flickering patterns, and each light would be its own network entry point at speeds of 1 to 10Mbps. The concept is more secure than current RF techniques because it requires linked devices be in line-of-sight, and the technology would draw far less energy than conventional radios. Says professor Thomas Tiny, “Imagine if your personal, iPhone, TV, radio and thermostat could all communicate with you when you walked in a room just by flipping the wall light switch and without the usual cluster of wires.” Yes… and speak about you behind your back. And plot your “accidental” death after taking out a big life insurance policy on you. You won’t get away with this LED network!

Listen up, KIRF fans. We’ve got a real one-of-a-kind one on our hands today, as this critter copies not one, but two entities in a single fell swoop. For starters, the company is named CNet Technology — we’ll let you do the math there — and secondly, this thing looks just about exactly like Apple’s own AirPort Express. Sure, there are a few extra LEDs on there to really ugly it up, but only someone in serious denial would ever say this thing didn’t get its inspiration from Cupertino. Officially dubbed the CWR-635M, this portable router / WAP simply plugs into one’s wall socket and provides a pair of Ethernet jacks and two USB ports locally for even more networking fun. There’s no telling if this copycat will ever be released on US soil, but given that made it into the FCC’s database, we reckon anything is possible.

While a good chunk of this month’s Professional Developers Conference will be focused on Windows 7, it looks like Microsoft has another little surprise up its sleeve, with CEO Steve Ballmer himself dropping word that the company also plans to introduce its new, tentatively-titled “Windows Cloud” OS at the conference. Of course, Ballmer isn’t about to get very specific about the OS just yet, though he does seem to be dampening expectations a bit by saying, “just like Windows Server looked a lot like Windows but with new properties, new characteristics and new features, so will Windows Cloud look a lot like Windows Server.” He also apparently confirmed that geo-replication and other features “designed for the cloud” would be built into the OS, and he confirmed the existence of Midori, but stated it was still in the incubation phase, adding that, “the guy in the office next door to somebody working on Midori isn’t supposed to know about Midori.” We assume that also means that Windows Cloud isn’t Midori, but we’ll know for sure once PDC gets underway on October 27th.

Netgear, we’re here to tell you it’s been far, far too long since you threw any new 802.11n gear our way, so we’re pretty stoked to see a few new pieces roll out today. The outfit is formally introducing the WNR2000 Wireless-N router and DGN2000 Wireless-N router with built-in DSL modem this morning, both of which boast the company’s own Push ‘N’ Connect with Wi-Fi Protected Setup to eliminate the need to remember those pesky network security passwords. Both units are available in kit form as well, which sees a USB wireless adapter bundled in just in case your rig is operating sans an 802.11n WiFi module. Everything is available now for anywhere between $89 and $129.

Aruba Networks already installed the “world’s largest” WLAN network at The Ohio Say University, but its latest deployment just seems strangely more, how do we say… patriotic. Tag-teaming with Babylon Telecommunications, the pair has rolled out a WiFi network that will provide internet access to over 20,000 US soldiers at Joint Base Balad in Iraq. Believe it or not, there was no existing authorized web access at the base before these two stepped in, but thanks to a contract awarded by the Army & Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES), troops at the largest US military base in the region can now e-mail loved ones with ease, test their ping times from the sandbox and join a few on the web poker tournaments during down time.

O3B satellites to enable connectivity for the world's

If you thought Verizon was taking its sweet time rolling out FiOS to your neighborhood, envision how long it would take to connect the entire continent of Africa. Verizon wouldn’t bother trying, but satellite company O3b, in partnership with Google, is doing just that. The pair plan to bathe that continent (and others) with soothing Internet waves via 16 medium-earth orbit (MEO) units. Latency is stated to be only 120 milliseconds, with maximum download speeds at 1.25Gbps. That’s seriously fast, about the same as Japan’s Kizuna (set to cover disconnected Asian regions), but before you cancel your 1.5Mbps WildBlue account and go on a bandwidth safari know that these new orbital hotspots are destined to act as backbones for use by smaller ISPs. They’ll in turn provide wireless access direct to customers over 3G or WiMax, throttling things appropriately.

We were all excited to stream Genius-generated playlists from iTunes 8 to our Airport Express last night when — poof — “-3256 Unknown Error Occurred.” This cryptic error, along with another under the equally descriptive name “-15000,” has been keeping iTunes 8 upgraders from using their Airtunes on remote speakers. Turns out the issue is one of Firewalls and Firmware. The solutions come from users at Apple’s discussion boards. Basically, you need to either turn off your Firewall and / or allow iTunes to accept incoming requests or update your Airport Express to the latest (7.3.2 as of this post) firmware version via AirPort Utility 6.3. Meanwhile, Windows-based iPod touch users are seeing Blue Screens of Death when plugging in their players due to some other undocumented problem. The solution there looks to be a reboot with the touch plugged in to force the system to recognize the device, run a sync, and turn off pic syncing (not the most elegant solution, clearly). Let’s hope Apple at least updates this with something more descriptive than “-3256″ in the future. Customer service reps at Apple say they’re aware of the problems and are working on a fix.

The idea of floating data centers is hardly a new one, but Google looks like it might be set to take things a large step further than most, at least if one of its current patent applications is any indication. Apparently, Google not only plans to take advantage of the sea water for a cooling system, but generate power for the floating platforms using so-called Pelamis Wave Energy Converters as well (you can see it doing its thing in the video after the break). According to the patent application, that would grant the data centers to be moved closer to users to cut down on cross-country latency, and also make them ideally suited to more transient needs for computing power, such as after a natural disaster or when a military presence is needed. Of course, there’s no evidence that Google has moved much beyond the sketch above just yet, but we certainly wouldn’t put it past ‘em to all of a sudden deploy a fleet of data centers when we least expect it.
